Thirst is the craving for fluids, resulting in the basic instinct of animals to drink. It is an essential mechanism involved in fluid balance. It arises from a lack of fluids or an increase in the concentration of certain osmolites, such as salt.

In other words, when thirst appears our body is telling we are somewhat dehydrated.

In contrast, when swimming despite of being surrounded by water  we  loose a lot off liquids on perspiration, breathing (we exhale water vapor) and also we produce more urine.
